A few little things that will help your candle burn beautifully.
A candle is a little ritual. And like most good rituals, it benefits from a little care.
Here are a few simple things I recommend to help your Darling, Rest. candle burn safely and beautifully.
Safety First
This is the part I don't want you to skip.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire.
- Keep it away from children and pets.
- Keep multiple burning candles at least 3 inches (7 cm) apart.
- Do not burn a candle if the vessel is cracked, chipped, or damaged.
- Do not move a burning candle while it is lit or while the wax is still liquid.
- Stop using the candle if the flame becomes unusually large, the vessel becomes excessively hot, or anything seems wrong.
If you're not sure, put it out.
Your First Burn Matters
The first burn helps establish an even melt pool. Before lighting, make sure the wick is properly positioned and unobstructed. For the first burn, allow the wax to melt toward the outer edges of the vessel, without exceeding 4 hours or any shorter limit specified for your candle.
The time this takes can vary between the 7 oz Signature Candle and the 2.8 oz Mini Candle, depending on the vessel, wick, and surroundings. Never leave a candle burning unattended or extend a burn beyond the recommended limit just to reach the edges.
Once your candle has cooled completely, trim the wick before your next burn.
Trim the Wick Between Burns
After the first burn, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm) before lighting again, or follow the specific wick-care instructions provided with your candle.
Keeping the wick trimmed helps maintain a steady flame and can reduce smoke and soot.
Always let the candle cool completely before trimming the wick.
Think of it simply:
First burn:
Allow the wax to melt toward the edges, within the recommended burn limit.
Every burn after:
Trim the wick before lighting.
Keep Your Burns to a Maximum of 4 Hours
For the best experience, do not burn your candle for more than four hours at a time, unless the specific product instructions indicate a shorter limit.
Extinguish the flame if the vessel becomes excessively hot or the candle behaves unusually. Let it cool completely before relighting.
Where Your Candle Lives Matters
Always burn your candle on a level, stable, heat-resistant surface.
Keep it away from:
- Children and pets
- Curtains, fabrics, and paper
- Other flammable materials
- Drafts, fans, and air vents
- Other heat sources
A calm, steady spot is best. Drafts can cause a candle to burn unevenly.
When to Blow It Out
For both the 7 oz Signature Candle and the 2.8 oz Mini Candle, follow the stopping instructions supplied with your specific candle. If those instructions are missing or unclear, contact Darling, Rest. before continuing to burn it near the bottom of the vessel.
Please don't burn it all the way down. Insufficient remaining wax can cause the vessel to overheat.
When in doubt, blow it out.
When It's Time to Extinguish
When your ritual is over, gently extinguish the flame using a candle snuffer or another appropriate method.
Let the candle cool completely before moving it.
Never move a candle while the wax is liquid, and do not use the lid to extinguish the flame unless the instructions for your specific candle say it is safe to do so.
When Your Candle Is Finished
Don't say goodbye to the vessel just yet.
Once the candle is completely cool and no longer in use, remove the remaining wax safely and clean the vessel according to its material and condition.
Never pour melted wax down the sink. It can harden inside your pipes.
Your empty vessel may become a little home for flowers, cotton pads, jewellery, or tiny treasures. Before reusing it, make sure it is completely cool, clean, undamaged. Do not reuse a cracked, chipped, or otherwise damaged vessel.
A Little Imperfection Is Normal
Darling, Rest. candles are hand-poured in small batches.
Small variations in colour, texture, finish, or the appearance of the wax may occur as part of the handmade process.
You may also notice some changes in the wax as your candle burns. Proper wick care and thoughtful burning can help support a more even burn.
Your candle doesn't have to look perfect every moment.
It just needs a little care.
Slow down. Light gently. Stay awhile.
Ralentissez. Allumez doucement. Restez un moment.
